The government is introducing a four-year integrated BEd programme from next year onwards with an aim to improve the quality of teachers and teaching, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Thursday while addressing principals of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas on the second day of the two-day conference. Early last year, the government had stated that the 2-year Bachelor of Education might soon be dropped in favour of a 4-year integrated teacher training programme.
The plans to develop the programme have been on for a year since Arun Jaitley had already made announcements to this effect for an integrated BEd programme in his Budget 2018 speech on February 1, 2018.
'Teaching tends to be last option for those who join’
There is a popular saying: 'Those who can, do; and those who cannot, teach' This means that people who do possess the skills in their chosen industry go on to get a job in that particular industry while those who don’t possess a decent level of skills go on to become teachers in those fields.
This sounds rather ironical because typically, one would assume that the cream of the crop in any field would become suitable teachers so that they could teach the next generations of employees how to be even better at their work. However, this is not the case in India.

BEd course to be of 4 years from next year: HRD Ministry
Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar shared that the government would be introducing BEd course of four years duration from the next year. This step is being undertaken by the government to improve the quality of teaching in India.
Regarding the same, Prakash Javadekar at a two day conference attended by principals of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas was quoted as saying, “We are going to launch a four- year integrated course from next year. The standard of teaching has gone down because it tends to be the last option for those who join.
